Default Help - Illum round base plug or machinery?

Found something on the surface near Manhay, Belgium in German positions overlooking the town that at first we thought was the base plug (see diagram) of a 105mm illumination round. However, after some cleaning, noticed that there appears to be gear teeth, and compared to the diagram, the center ring seems too graduated. Also, the center of the ring looks as if it was once highly polished, possibly indicative of a metal to metal seat. With bearings as a inner seal.

We're now wondering if it's not part of a drive train or gear assembly.

Any German (or American) equipment experts who can identify this item?

    Thanks.
