Meuse Argonne Springfield found in river

I found this US springfield in Meuse Argonne at the village of Romagne-sous-montfaucon.I was in the river trying to find stuff with my stick.lucky day ,my friend had it clean up for me and put some product to keep the wood good.The rifle was in the mood that is why the wood is still in good condition.I think this was a capture rifle because the stock is broken of .

Pity about the broken stock, but none the less a very interesting piece, and in really good condition too for a relic

Does look like a captured weapon. The stock being hacked off is one clue, the bolt being missing the other.

What a lovely find, it was probably swung against a tree which broke the stock before being chucked into the river. Its rare to have the woodwork remaining.
If only it could talk!!!

Good spot. The model 1917 was issued in small numbers to rear echelon troops during the Normandy campaign. They were also used by American artillerymen and mortar men in the North African campaign.

Damn, i honestly thought when i first looked at the picture that it was a Model 1917 but I said nothing incase I was wrong and looked like an idiot

Looking at Steve M's post on the American casualty of the battle of Meuse Argonne in 1918, i guess there's a good chance it could date from then as well as WW2!
