New Britsh Army WW2 Site!

Hey all,

Yesterday (saturday) I visited a British WW2 site, and oh was it great!!! It was nicely tucked away, and I probably would never of found it had it not been for a reliable tip off from a mate! It was a bit of drive, but well worth it!

I found a good few period peices.... a LOT more than the other site I've been visiting anyway!

Anyway..... the loot!

32 x .303 casings
1 x .30 casing
1 x .45 casing (probably from an M1A1)
1 x 9mm hollow bullet head
6 x .303 bullet heads
2 x No. 6 Mills Grenade base caps (41 & 42 dated)
3 x Mills Grenade fragments
1 x 2inch mortar cap
4 x Data plates dated 1940 (from off an ammo crate maybe?)
9 x 12 gauge shotgun bases (probably post war)

Oh, and 6 shillings!

Has there been any more news on them since the last time they were mentioned? I've got 10 of them in a box somewhere, and its the only thing in my collection I have no idea about

Some nice finds there BP! I think your right ref the shotgun cartridges, I recon 1970s as my grandad used to use them and I remember them rattling round the tractor cab with those perforated rims,,, that or the old lad just rarely fired the things LOL. Sorry I cant say somthing useful about the tags though

Now.....some good news for you. I think I've tracked the data plate down for you

Have a look at that page then click on the link to the other patents in the family Take a look at the manufacturer

It would appear to be a type of barricade device and, looking at the description, possibly a hooped barb wire entanglement kind of thing. Nice find !

I have also attached a pic of the internal firing mechanism of a No. 36 grenade.....the bits you have found are part of this column. The 'thread' is actually where the internal spring embeds itself into the metal column when the grenade goes off

Oh....and yes, the 12 bore cases are post war. You will, over time, find tons of the bloody things. I always dig them up and take them home purely so I don't find them again

Cheers Steve, it looks like your absolutely spot on about the tags!

I imagine these little blighters would have hung from the barbed wire. It makes sense as I found all 4 tags in the same area suggesting that there would have been one of these fences erected in that particular area.

It beats finding scrap iron at my other site anyway!!

Just looking again at your finds. Nice stripper clip you have ! These were used for the .30cals which is a little unusual as the British army almost always used weapons using .303s. Very odd.

Also, are the coins the right era ? Can't tell what they are in your pic.
