The gates of hell were opened and we accepted the invitation to enter" 26/880 Lance Sgt, Edward Dyke. 26th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers , ( 3rd Tyneside Irish )

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

I always thought that it was a definate NO when it came to digging etc on the French battlefields unless on an organised dig or with shedloads of permits etc.

Not sure if this is of help, but it looks ot me like the item marked AKE is a US WW1 mess tin cover. And if so the stamped 71686 would pretty much have to be a serial number. Looking at all my material that number falls intot he range of serial numbers issued to the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Yankee Division. At least that is the unit he would have been assigned to when they first gave out the numbers in Feb/March 1918.

I am not aware of a roster of the 104th, but if you bug me I will check with a friend of mine in case there is one with a guy named A---- K. E----

As far as i know it is not legal to dig at Verdun. Moreover, I would not play with those rusty but still evil "confettis".
