At the last minute, both me and Whitehunter decided to meet up for one last search in 2012. This was WH first visit to this site, unfortunately the weather gods weren't kind, the 31/12 turned out to be another very wet and windy day, in fact torrential rain all day. Still it blew away the Xmas cobwebs to prepare us for New Years drink time and as it turned out the finds where ok too.

The first pics were taken about a month ago on my previous visit, with a few as found shots...

The tail from a US Bazooka.

Unsure on this?, could it be the metal top off a 2inch smoke emitting mortar?

Now on to the New Years Eve search. Because the weather was so bad I didnt take my camera but WH had his mobi and took these in very poor light. This is only a taster as most finds went straight into our finds bags and wheren't pictured on the day.

First up... I got a good signal and started digging, because it looked like a few fired 30 cal casings could be in the hole I started counting them as they came out. Every spadeful was producing 10 or so casings, I kept going and lost count at 328 and still they were coming out.

I'd had enough so called WH over, he carried on and pulled another 200 or so out of the same hole. Here are some being piled up... In the end we recovered in excess of 500 30 call casings from this one hole!!!

We then went to another part of the site that had been used as a mortar, Bazooka, rifle grenade range. But I was really surprised when WH pulled out this nice practice M36 British mills Grenade. Completely inert it is drilled not only around the casing but also through the base nut, nicely it also retains much of the original white paint.

Im hoping there'll be more in there to find in the future!! Sadly these were the only pic's taken on the day but we'll update this post with the other interesting relics recovered soon.
    Cheers

In your finds photo you have a Garand M1 rifle En Bloc clip for .30 cal ammo.

If you decide to part with some of your .30 cases.....remember me ;-) ;-)

Finally able to post some of the finds cleaned.

Here's the pile of cartridges fresh out my finds bag, all are fired and inert cartridge cases. As well as the US 30-06 there's also British 303 and a couple of US M1 carbine and even a few British 1950's 7.62. Alas still all waiting to be washed

My favourite find for the day, a completely empty practice Bazooka head, that had obviously been fired during training judging by the large flatten area to the front.

I like the shrapnel damage, obviously picked up after it was used.

    Another mixed bag
The remains of a 3 inch Mortar tail with only one fin,
All the rings came out of one hole at about 4 inches depth. They are eyelets I assume from a tent?
The ring is from the top of a trip flare, it seems to fit the relic WW2 couple that I have better than the post war 1950's examples so I'm guessing it's WW2.

Now here's a question... in the run up to DDay with all the intensive training going on. Did the troops practice fighting whilst wearing their life preservers, which they obviously had to do on DDay fighting across the beaches? I ask because as you can see I found a well rusted CO2 cartridge at the WW2 depth. These were used to inflate the Life Presevers?
    The cone details follow.

Yet another of these cones, I'm still unsure what it's from but the internal measurement is exactly 2 inches across. So probably off a 2 inch mortar of some type? It has also suffered a shrapnel dent.

This little stash all came out of the same hole, because I'd found a few I called WH over and he recovered some bits as well. All were recovered at the same depth of between 4 to 6 inches. Obviously the larger clips are for the US Garande Rifle but what are the stripper clips. We were thinking perhaps Springfield Rifle?

Not sure what this black painted metal relic 'thingy' was originally, but kept it because I liked the damage it's suffered.
