Exciting finds! Even on previously dug sites it is amazing what can be found. One mans trash is another mans treasure etc. It's great to see the contrast between 'as dug' and cleaned in your previous threads so I'm looking forward to the progress of this one.

    Mark.

    Cleaning completed

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I present to you the cleaned finds from a very short visit, most of which you will recall came from the surface. I don't know who has been previously digging the site but they know sod all about WW2 relics !!! Still......their loss due to lack of knowledge is my gain

    Here we go...............

First up the rusty iron bits that will fall to bits if I clean them too much. Far right are a few 20mm links, middle a couple of transport nuts, above those what looks like a No 36m base plug tool.

Odds and sods next. Loads of flare carts. A couple of caps off something, an electrical fitting without markings, and a couple of electrical connectors. Also an engine bearing or big end cap off something.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

Has some markings on it but mostly it's corroded badly.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

One of the caps has markings, and a date of '42.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

More odds and ends. A glim lamp disc, shaving foam tube, a big bulb, a strange item that reminds me of an old fashioned choke, and three 'dials'

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

Close up of the three dials. They look like they might fit the glim lamp so are they markings for the dimmer ?

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

A few more odds but a little more identifiable.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

Lots of markings on this. Radio part ?

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

An on/off dimmer switch with an AM stamp and code. 5C - Aircraft electrical switches. Cockpit light switch ?

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

A little connector. 10H - Radio Connectors, Discs Indicating, Fuses, Leads, Plugs and Sockets and Ancillary Parts

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

It wouldn't be an RAF base without 303s !!!!

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

    Armour piercing........

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

......and incendiary. Nice blue annulus as well just to make the ID clearer

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

Now the finds of the visit. First up a group shot of all the No 848 bomb pistol parts.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

In amongst these parts are these two. A no 28 tail pistol firing pin and a No 28/30 arming wingnut.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

A really nice base from a No 848

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

You may recall from the 'before cleaning' shot that I had 4 of these with the protective cap in place. Most fell apart when I tried to clean them, but this one held together so I will leave it like this. The cap covers the arming vane.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

Most of the arming vanes had large chunks of the vanes missing, but three were more or less complete. These were the ones still covered by the caps

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

I get goosebumps everytime I look at these. One of my best ever finds. A whole stack of No 28/30 tail pistol bakelite protective caps and 14 No 28 tail pistols. 10 are completely intact, 4 have minor damage.

RAF airbase dump - New site and a new dump !!

Some carried dates as well as stamps denoting what make of pistol they are......

And just in case you are in any doubt about the caps. Here are 4 of the tail pistols with the caps screwed on

The whole of the RRPG is digging the site next weekend, (weather permitting), so keep an eye out for our post reporting on what was found. I've got a feeling the finds are going to be amazing !

The clue's written on them Steve...

Time delay dials from RAF No. 849 Fuzes, used with 4.5" TI (Target Indicator) flare clusters.
Due to the 70-second delay plus the Safe position they are from MkIII 849s.

    All the best,
    PB

Note the stem and cap are similar to that of the No. 848 Fuze.
