Oxalic acid is good for superficial rust , thise kind of rust needs an electrolyse treatment.
And it is like, my friend, Phil says; it is to far gone for that too.
You could coat it with a polyester, it will prevent parts of falling and prevent it to deteriorate.

Halfway down the bayonet the rust looks as though it is the scabbard that has rusted and the blade is still underneath?

Thanks for the advice guys, I guess it is too far gone. However may take a look under the scabbard as per Donnie.

I think its a rusty relic ,its to far gone to try and restore it to its former glory , if it were mine i would apply a coat of some sort of rust retarder and display it as it is , a nice relic , cheers Raymond

Re: Relic Lebel Bayonet - Can it be saved ?
Hi FW, there is not a huge amount that can be done to it. I would enjoy it for what it is. Avoid handling it too much. I would certainly not apply any kind of varnish or lacquer to it.
There is a British made car product called "Waxoyl". This will kill the rust and turn it dark brown. But at £20 a can it is not viable to buy just for this project.
Cheers, Ade.
