In John's picture ? If so, it is a British 2 inch mortar cap, with 'Remove before firing' written around the top.

Pygmy lamp bulb, used in MkII Airfield Lighting and other airfield installations.
Not a jeep valve as I first thought to check, but it's a close match to a Ford/Fordson flathead V8 valve of the period.An engine valve. I was hoping for some markings and found some ! I got quite excited to begin with, imagining the words 'Rolls Royce' or 'Merlin' coming through the grime. But sadly it was not to be..........
..........bloody FORD !
