That is the gun site for the Sturmgeschutz , Selbstfahrlafetten -Zielfernrohr 1A ( Telescopic sight for Self Propelled Guns ),

The sight is code BEH manufacturer Ernst Leitz GmbH , Wetzlar that is a remarkable find in that condition !!!

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

In late September, I had another campaign in the ravine next to my University.
    Excavations were interesting ...
I dug a small shovel soldier, the German ammo pouch for rifle, several German gas masks, a detail from the electric cable (Siemens 1939) and Soviet badge. I also found a Infantry Assault Badge in zinc.
The land was very hard because of that I damaged the sign of my shovel.
Hi Seb, sorry to 'dig up' such an old post, but this one really interested me. One of my Order Red Star's was awarded to a Lt of the 16th independent signals battlation (Red Army) that fought in the area.

The citation specifically mentions him using a captured German 'heavy cable' for improvised communications. Perhaps it was this one?
