Hi All: What is this and what was it used for? It was dug at Stalingrad near Gumrak Airport. I saw one like it on a different thread but it was "diamond" shaped.

Hi.
Its a Luftwaffe shipping tag used to mark various items for air transport.
They came in two shapes, circular and diamond shape.
Colors were at least three different white, red and yellow.
They have been found in great numbers in Russia and in europe around german airports.
Also they have wrongly been thought to be "ticket out of Stalingrad" for wounded and sick german soldiers.
There is a thread on this forum that contain at least one picture showing these metal tags.
I will get back later with a link to that thread.
Best regards
Laplander
Hi Laplander: Thank you very much for the explanation of the Luftwaffe shipping "tag". Mine has traces of red paint in it, the picture didn't show this too clearly. Yes, I've heard the story about the "ticket out of Stalingrad" too.
Thanks, Bob
In this thread there is a picture showing a fair amount of these "tags"

Look at post 144 in the thread.
Well worth to look through the whole thread since there is lots of good pictures.
