    Hello Everyone,

I have been trying to find out what the attached picture is. I was involved in some digging in, and around, Stalingrad 2 summers ago. I found this object within the perimeter of what was Pitomnik Airfield.

It looks to me like it could be a padre's communion box or some other 'storage' unit for his bible perhaps?

    Any ideas?

I would guess grave marker too, after all who wants a hole(all be it at cross shaped hole)in the lid of a box.

IMO a grave marker! Nice item, maybe you should/shouldnt have dug deeper!

Looks more to be a lid of some sort. There appears to be two places for a strap to go through.

It does look like the lid of something to me, those two metal parts attached either side of the crucifix make me think a handle or a canvas or leather strap was once attached, as Packin9 says. I suppose there must be an endless variety of equipment, ammunition and supplies of all sorts that might have been delivered in a box with a lid of that size on it.

Could it be that the crucifix is a later addition, cut into the lid so that it could be used as a grave marker as suggested. It seems possible to me that a grave marker made during/just after a battle would be made out of whatever appropriate materials the burial party could find.

This is for the MG 34. In the hole are inserted bipod. This adaptation is done in the field workshops for better stability machine gun in the snow.
