    A little bag of relics just arrived from a Volgograd-based digger and I was curious about this battered but fairly substantial alloy disc....



    A few minutes on Google - starting with the translation Gewurz = spice - revealed that this is the lid of a German spice canister which once would have formed part of the equipment of a field kitchen. The markings remain quite legible...



    Maybe not the World's most exciting relic, but it must have travelled a long way across Russia, and 'Stalingrad' is exactly 70 years ago. I rather like it.
