Article about: I have spoken with a Danish Waffen SS researcher who states that this could be the nickname of a Danish volunteer.

No idea Dim if Bob is the shortened version of Robert in German or Danish as it is in English.

Interesting finds! Maybe Bob is a surname not a nickname?

Hi Guys, Micheal Wittmann's gunner, Oberscharführer Balthazar "Bobby" Woll is the only example I can think of who used some form of "Bob" but as a nickname.

    Cheers, Ade.

Just a thought but why must BOB be a name?, Perhaps BOB is the initials for a unit or organisation rather than the name of someone. Ive never heard of people writing their names on ammo boxes, but I have heard of German units marking ammo boxes to stop pilfering by other units.

I do not think that Bob is a name - if he is Danish. Bob is not that common a name in Denmark, and especially not at that time. After the war it was a little different with the US influence - but still it is not that common...

It could be a surname - as a guy called e.g. Boerge O. Bahnsen - that would be BOB.... I think it would have his name on it if it was used for hes private stuff - instead of ammo. When I was at the infantry I had a .50 BMG ammo crate for my food etc.....

    Just my thougths...

if you look closely, it is a lower case "b" at the end. Bob. Scratched out this way it is not an acronym but really does look like a proper name. BOB or bob would have been the logical acronym to scratch out on something.
