WW2 RAF Lancaster base - Dump discovered - Finds keep coming

Article about: by Steve T A big buckle off something and a piece of metal that reminds me of a metal MG belt feeder. The stainless steel item is indeed part of a USAAF .50 cal flexible feed chute. by Steve

...some sort of valve fitting? marked all around its edge.

5D/xxx is for Aircraft Armament related items.
I think I've seen these on the wiring harnesses for RAF bomb carriers, but will have to dig one out of storage and check.

I'm pretty sure the circular alloy "caps" are fuze well transit plugs.

That would explain why we've found so many.

One other thing PB. Is there a list of all the AM reference numbers ? I now have the prefix number listing but wondered if there was a 'complete' list.

    Cheers

There are probably volumes upon volumes of them somewhere in the RAF archives, same as outdated copies of the Army's VAOS lists.
However, if they are anything like VAOS lists they were not only regularly updated but previous editions were to be either amended or destroyed and replaced.

Many years ago I had a brief glance at a mid-1960s copy covering group 10 items. I only got up to 10B/xxx and that was after nineteen 2"-thick foolscap books on the shelf.
I guess nowadays the whole back catalogue would fit on a CD though.

To give an example, here's a section of the 22C/x (Aircrew Equipment) series:

22C/243 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, left, size 8
22C/244 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, left, size 8½
22C/245 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, left, size 9
22C/246 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, left, size 10
22C/247 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, right, size 8
22C/248 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, right, size 8½
22C/249 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, right, size 9
22C/250 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 12V, right, size 10
22C/251 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, left, size 8
22C/252 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, left, size 8½
22C/253 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, left size 9
22C/254 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, left, size 10
22C/255 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, right, size 8
22C/256 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, right, size 8½
22C/257 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, right, size 9
22C/258 Gloves, electrically heated, Type C, 24V, right, size 10
    etc. etc.

    All the best,
    PB

You have been busy! Photo 5 are Merlin engine front mounting pads, right hand end of the engine bearer in the photo. They are an asbestos composite so no licking them.

That looks a lot like a German Uniform Belt hook.

    A clip.

    Hi Steve,

Just out of curiosity, how big is the "clip" please mate?

Depending on its size it will be either the "hook" from a "hook and eye" set as used to do up the collar on a BD blouse OR, if it is large, it will be a belt hook from a tunic. (Used in the same manner as the the Germans did with their tunics. Hook passed through an over-sewn eyelet at about waist level to support any waist belt worn).

    Regards etc

PB - Thanks for that. I would be interested in seeing if a list does exist, even though it would be rather weighty ! Any idea where I could get one ?

Ian_ - Excellent ! Thanks for that. I'll give them a coat of clear varnish to prevent asbestos 'leakage'

collectorww2 - Possible I suppose, but a long shot. As far as I am aware there were never any POWs at this base.

    Jimpy - It's 1 1/4 inch

    Cheers guys
