I think I had better start by saying 'sorry, its another one'!
This is a '63 Pattern yataghan but it has markings on the cross guard 'V. MkX 181'
anyone any thoughts what this might mean?
many thanks as always
Dave

Let me set it out again; "V. M. XII . 181"
Reading backwards, this is bayonet 181, of the 12th Company (XII Roman) of Volunteer Militia. Not sure which Volunteer Militia, but British or Commonwealth.
Note, on ricasso it has a British inspector stamp with "S" which signifies it was made in Solingen and the mark is a British inspector in the factory. So this is Government contract made that has been turned over to the Volunteers most likely around the 1880's .
wow, so much information from so few letters/numbers. Thats really excellent Anderson, many thanks indeed
regards, dave
Is it not actually Middlesex Rifle Volunteers ?
many thanks RAD, that sounds good to me
