Whacked by something hard but military life is like that especially on the losing side when everyone's throwing their weapons onto a heap at the end.
I think it's hard to say either way.
To remove the metal, not bend or distend it, I'd say shrapnel, or bullet, something moving very quickly.
(Although the flashguard is about the thinnest metal used on the mauser bayonet.)

Fast moving metal certainly, especially with the edges of the gash in the metal splaying out a bit
in the first picture it looks like the piece of shrapnel is still stuck under the flash guard. to me that would take a much harder strike than from throwing it in a pile.
