So here is my next question. Since the bayonet has no emotional value to me and the rust pitted the metal pretty bad, should I sharpen it? The blade already has an edge to it but is not sharp. Should I or shouldn't I?

No! Newer sharpen a bayonet, unless you gonna go for an assault into WW1 trenches. it's not a hunting/camping or whatsoever knife. Knife it's just an addition to the word bayonet, purely to mention the type of blade. E.g. Sword-bayonet, yatagan-bayonet etc.

Why sharpen a bayonet, Do You dont have a knife, You will never get a good sharpness or edge on 3 or 6mm blade.

leaving the blade dull is actually safer, Ive accidentally cut myself on sharp bayonets

it's a display piece now, not necessary to be sharpened

    Been there, Battle gear !

As said, leave it just the way it is. It has some value, but next to none
if you sharpen it. If you plan on taking it to sea for work filleting fish
for a living, then by all means go for it.........
    Regards,

    Steve.

I would not sharpen it, that is rule No1...
I would leave it as it is.

Was just wondering about that. The blade does have a slightly sharpened edge on it, and because it was rusted with the amount of pitting that it had it figured what the hell would make a good hunting knife or something.
