No these are theater alterations during the war.

Nice collection.
It's interesting that the quillons on two of them have been
bent backwards to form hand guards...........!

Were the Jap fighting knives made by themselves or were they captured bayos converted by allied troops? Japanese military discipline being very harsh I would have thought them less likely than most armies to 'destroy' the Emperor's property!

I believe all execpt the 5th knife down were altered by allied soldiers after being taken from the Japanese. Knife number 5 was purchased from a WW2 vet who captured it like this from a Japanese soldier on Saipan. The grip on this knife is very small and the blade has a Samuri sword style cut to it.
