    Default M1898 Bayonet

    Hi guys,

Here is a bayonet i have recently purchased, it is a (i believe)shortend M1898 bayonet made by V C Schilling Suhl and numbered 6874 made in i think 1906. It has no grooves in the grips and these are original and have not been replaced. My question is this, why would this bayonet have been shortend? for more practical use in the trenches? for use as a fighting knife or possibly early Third Reich use?

    Cheers Donnie.

It could have been a trench cut down, the fact that it don’t have a slot for the lug ,it started out as a walk out bayonet ,but, I have a few of these cut-down( with the bayonet slot) which the Turk did after the war for export. Do you have a better photo of the frog lug.

    Hi Ronnie,
it's a cut down S98nA., used by the Turkish army... They replaced the grips, grinded away the regimental numbers and gave them a new serialnumber.
The Turks also used a lot of old Gew.88 after WW1...

Hi Chaps, here's my cut down S98aA (one piece grip). This one was probably cut down (the blade measures 14 inches or 36 cms, longer than Turked ones) for trench use after being damaged. As opposed to the 'Turked' ones it retains all its markings (please see the pics). It's got a Prussian 'W' mark & dated 1901, maker marked Erfurt & regimentally marked 35.R.9.136 (Fusilier-Regiment "Prinz Heinrich von Preussen" (Brandenburgisches) Nr 35, 9 Kompanie), Cheers, Richard.
