Default M1916 "Avenger" Trench knife with unusual handle

I thought I would post this recent acquisition that was picked up at auction for a very good price. M1916 knife made by L. Pradel. Unfortunately missing scabbard but has a nice patina. I am curious about the handle though as In have not seen any others like this. Also, it appears that the cross guard has been shortened. I know from Reibert's informative thread about these that many were used post war by various countries. If anyone has any info I would be grateful.

    Cheers.

It looks similar to the handles on some old woodworking chisels!....
