Your wife's uncle's dad must have picked this one ( the one marked "Cebu" and "Leyte") from a fallen or captured Japanese soldier assigned in the Philippines. Cebu is the largest city in the Southern Philippines and the Japanese occupied this city extensively. Leyte is near Cebu. This was the island where Gen. MacArthur first step back to the Philippines and fulfilled his famous words " I Shall Return".
I don't know whether the Japanese soldier made this marks but if he did it. Then we could assumed that he was assigned first in Cebu and was reassigned to Leyte to meet the returning Americans and met his fate there..
Very intresting, thats what i would really like to know, if the japanese soldier painted it or was it painted when it was captured?
How neat. I like items like these. They have so much character.
