Question about notch in WW I M1903 bayonet
I have inherited an M1903 US bayonet (Springfield Armory, 1918). It has the initials "W.P." carved into the wooden handle, along with three V-notches (easy enough to figure out what they represent). There is also a fourth notch, with a trough that is flat and about a half inch wide. Does anyone have an idea what that is all about?
Also, I assume there is no readily accessible database to get the rosters for the 22 US Divisions that were in the fight at one time or another in 1918, and see how many of the soldiers had the initials "W. P."?
Any help would be much appreciated.
