Looks original to me. The Chassepot was not German, rather French, which is why you will not see any German markings. Some came with the inscription, others didn't. Also, some were made in Sheffield, England for the French army. You can see my example if you scroll down the page on the following link:

Bayonet-French. But remade (so says the seller) for the German m1888 rifle.
But there is no German military brand (regiment, unit, weapon number).
On this bayonet there is no alteration of the ring, so it can not be used for the m1888 rifle. This is my opinion.
    Or could it be?

I wasn't aware of them being used on the M1888. Hopefully someone else will contribute and add some knowledge to the situation

I would think the reworking is authentic judging by the patina and no sign of recent filing of metal. I've never heard of someone faking a rework on one of these bayonets, can't really see why anyone would bother.

Doubt that the ring has not been changed. And without this , you can't use it on the M1888. Samples that are described in the literature have these changes. There are no ring changes on this bayonet.

It could be used on Gew71 wout the ring extra opening, question is it was used on other rifle too, the backspine of handle is damaged, so it looks spurious, anyway the blade is ok, any serialing? how large is MRD? the pictures are dark, nothing visible.

Thanks for the answer. Photos so far only such. Size - as Chassepot. The handle is damaged. This is not for M1888 - definitely.
