Some of my 1888 Pattern Bayonets

Hello all,
I am new to the forum and at last I can upload some pics.
Here is a selection of my 1888 Pattern Bayonets showing three variations.From top to bottom in the main photo;
There are two Mk1 type 2 Identified by the two brass rivets each side of the grips and a clearing hole through the wooden grips just above the top rivet.
This was located here because this bayonet was for the Britsh Army's first magazine fed rifle the .303" Lee Metford. The Metford had a cleaning rod located under the barrel protruding out to just behind the muzzle. To take the bayonet a hole was drilled into the pommel inside the bayonet slot which allowed the cleaning rod to fit in.

The next bayonet is the Mk2. This is almost identical except the clearing hole has now been drilled through the metal pommel. This was modified to fit the newer Lee Enfield Mk1 (Long Lee Enfield) Which did not have a cleaning rod and so there was no need to drill a hole into the rear of the pomel in the bayonet slot.
The Metford and Enfield rifle were almost identical the difference was the rifling inside the barrel.

The last one is the Mk3 which is identical to the Mk2 except it now has screws instead of brass rivets.

The one not in the photo is the Mk1 type 1 which has three brass rivets on each grip with the clearing hole in the same place as the M1 type 2. (Anyone want to sell me one????)

Love that long lee, that will be my next rifle, after i've finished paying for my L3A2, L85 and possible ZB39. Do you know anyone that could supply me with a lock stud and scabard for the 1888? I have a type 2 for my Martini Metford carbine but its missing said parts. Would a cut down 1907 scabbard work ok?

Hello Chris,
The only thing I can suggest is google your want ie 1888 scabbard and see what comes up. The 1907 scabbard won't do it is a defferent scabbard altogether for a different blade. If yo can find a battered 1888 cheap buy it for the locking stud. I am in thr process of buying another Long Lee with the charger guide.
