I stand to be corrected but to me it looks like the ceremonial scabbard cover (not a scabbard itself) for the M5 bayonet used with the M1 Garand rifle.

Hmm, I see the logic, Casanova and sheeps intestines maybe the inspiration?
Seriously though, I am pretty sure it is for the Garand bayonet;
More recently I believe that US honour guards have used white painted bayonet scabbards removing the need for such a cover so I think this might be a fairly scarce item in good condition.
What do our US members reckon?
