Did the recipients need to buy for their own money the de-nazified replacement, or were they given it free of charge by the BRD?

The 1957-version "replacement" awards were not provided/issued by the state; they had to be bought.

I just noticed that, one by one, I have since acquired full-size examples of all the other decorations on the ribbon bar (the Eisernes Kreuz 1st & 2nd Class, the Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen and the Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber.

This gave me the idea to take a group picture. This is how the contents of the award display frame or, well, the funeral pillow of the grouping's original wearer might have looked like:
