The Luftwaffe blue uniform re emerged ca. 1957, I think, whereas this piece is slate grey of the first hour.
FB, yes that is correct, the "Slate Grey" colour was used on the first examples of uniform items...both Heer and Luftwaffe Affenjackes being visually the same, except for the Luftwaffe cuff title !
    Prost ! Steve.

This slate grey uniform, based in part for what been planned for the European Defense Community battle dress ca. 1954 was dropped in the face of public disgust, as well as the need to match the NVA more or less, because the east Germans had recycled the Wehrmacht uniform as a psychological warfare tactic against the "Americanization" of the illegitimate (in Pankow's eyes) of the Bw. The German-German fight in the 1950s and 1960s over military symbolism was fairly intense, actually. An interesting and compelling story, to be sure.

You want to double check that your cap is not army vice Luftwaffe. The 1960s army caps are very dark grey, but not Fliegergrau, although the latter term is more III. Reich. I own several of these army issue caps of the 1960s, and they are almost anthracite grey, in fact.

The funny thing today with the Bw uniform, say, versus US uniforms, is how un uniform they really are. When an officer or senior NCO has their uniform tailored, there is huge variation in subtle details, as well as color of grey.

There is a move afoot among younger officer candidates in the Bw to scrap the grey uniform in favor of a dress uniform or parade uniform on the level of glory of that of the western European NATO and EU allies, somewhat as the US Army has made this odd return to the pre 1902 posture with the scrapping of the atomic green uniform. Whatever the result, when the uniforms are poorly made and especially made of lousy textiles, they look awful.

FB...you are right about the colour in the 1960's !...but Army caps are piped in arm of service colour around crown and top and bottom of hat band, three separate areas of piping.... as Luftwaffe have only one area, around the crown...making Tom's cap LW.
    Prost ! Steve.
