Edelweiss help please.

Guys,

I believe this to be a Bundeswehr Edelweiss due to the bent stem and length of the leaf on the left, can someone confirm please?

I've always used the bent stem tip as a rule of thumb for post-war badges. If they ever made one like it in wartime, I've certainly never seen one.

Be aware there are two types of Bundeswehr cap edelweiß -- the sew-on type, as show, plus there is another style with prongs instead of holes.

Aside from the stem, the easiest way to tell these from the WW2 type is by the two leaves. If they appear like they're going to 'hug' the flower, it's postwar. If the leaves both point to the right (viewer's perspective), it's wartime pattern.

There's also an Austrian version worn by the Bundesheer. Almost the same as the postwar Bundeswehr version except made for having 2 sewing holes on each petal instead of one. There also some additional detail and a slightly different color wash on the metal.

I've updated my photo to include a Wehrmacht-era edelweiß for comparison. Several design differences although the major features of the WH style are the orientation of the two leaves and the straight stem. The gilt wash is gone from the center of my WH example.
