My small Bundeswehr “57 Style” ribbon bar collection
As all the members of this subforum know perfectly, after the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Authorities found themselves in need of regulating the decorations that, in the future, would be granted by the Federal Government and by the Länder. But, in addition, it was necessary to establish a criterion in relation to the decorations and distinctions granted by the previous Regimes, which constituted a particularly pressing problem in the case of National Socialism, precisely because of the high number of people who had decorations awarded by the authorities of the Third Reich.
In the end it was decided to approve a standard with the rank of Law that, in general, maintained the validity of the decorations granted during the Second Reich and the Weimar Republic.
With regard to the distinctions granted during the Third Reich, only military and some civil decorations specifically detailed in the Law were authorized, and only if the National Socialist emblems had been removed. The decorations of the NSDAP and, in general, all those of a political nature, were definitively prohibited.
And with respect to the decorations granted by the Allied Nations to Germany during the two World Wars, the Federal President was authorized to confirm them or to revoke concession.
The Law passed in Bonn on July 26, 1957, with the signatures of the Federal President, Theodor Heuss and the Federal Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer.
It was the rule that allowed the veterans of the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS who came to serve in the Bundeswehr during the fifties, sixties seventies and early eigthies, to wear on their uniforms the decorations, emblems and badges won during the Second World War.
Over the years, the veterans were adding to their ribbon bars the decorations granted by the government of the Federal Republic.
All of them are familiar enough to simply show the photographs and the name of the medals or badges that form each ribbon bar.
First of all I want to apologize if I made any mistake in the description of the awards. I am sure that the great experts of this subforum will be benevolent with me. Also reading the thread of HPL 2008 entitled "1957er ribbon bars" I realized that a ribbon bar that I have in my collection of the Second World War, is probably in fact of this period under the 1957 regulation.
