I remember reading some where that the ones with 4 holes as opposed to 5, were post war. Here is one from the Bundeswehr

The bottom of the stem of a Bundeswehr badge points to the right, on a WW2 badge it points to the left.
WW2 examples have 4 or 5 holes depending on the maker

Here is my old collection of WW2 Edelweiss, note the bottom of the stems compared to the Bundeswehr examples shown above. There are 4 and 5 hole examples there too

Also the leave on the left stops behind the first petal on TR examples whilst on post war types it stops at the second petal.
