Picked this up today buried in a box of US veteran uniforms. I am not knowledgeable about WW2 German, but would love for you all to tell me you think this is an original item! I cannot make out any of the red ink on the inside of the cap.

I think it's reproduction..................sorry.
If I had to guess, I'd say a POW made hat.

Sorry for the one liner. I usually do qualify my views, don't know why I didn't here. very remiss of me so apologies again.
my rationale is:
The construction is non-standard and I think it has all the hallmarks of being hand made rather than manufactured. The insignia may have been re-applied and the quality seems of a poor standard for TR caps.
Given the provenance, if it's come from a vet, then it could therefore be a pow made cap as has been posted above.
Just my opinion based on the photos.
