Although I have no hat, no I can assure you. I stared at some pictures and I see that in the area of the stitches can be seen a little wear brown.

They are beating up on this hat on the other forum. As I stated, I never saw another by this maker, repro or real. I still lean toward its being real, but only a hands on will tell at this point.
The wonder of the Internet is that it allows the uninformed to become "instant experts." I agree that nothing in the pictures would throw out red flags. Possibly the eagle was removed in order to sell the piece on Ebay. At least it is an easy piece to replace.

I do have the Handbuch d RZM at hand, and might be persuaded to examine the listings for Trier, a not unimportant town in western Germany, which surely had a garrison, and also hat makers. It is today a wonderful place, with fabulous Roman ruins, a pleasing locale on the Mosel. I spent a lot of time there while I lived in horrid Kasierslautern.Click image for larger version.

The town of Trier boasted two cap maker (artisan, A2) with the name Saur, Josef and Peter, at least such was the case in 1935. Maybe they were brothers or cousins or who knows?

Any casual reading of the RZM Handbuch makes perfectly clear that the Schiffer book cosmos on this topic is wholly inadequate. Click image for larger version.

Trier has many nice sights, among which are the Porta Nigra, and the market place nearby.

The nameless masons of Roman Germania represent a historically more significant phenomenon than the forehead free pressure craze ca. 1938. The former still stands, whereas what is left to show of the latter save the digital ramblings we behold here?
