Sorry to say. This is a one look fake
I could get into details as to why, but honestly, every single part of this cap is bad
Liner, sweatband, Sweatshield, insignia, fabric, piping, visor, maker mark, chin strap, etc., etc. etc.
Add to that, color Waffenfarbe on SS visors are the rarest of the rare
"Please", Thank You" and proper manners appreciated
My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them

A real one (which are almost as rare as hen's teeth) will cost you $20,000 and up.

Compare to an original (but not with a colored Waffenfarbe ) and you will see the difference

Ahh Thanks !!!!! Cap is real- HAPPY! Value$1,000,000
If you think this cap looks anything like Wittmann's cap, you might need to get your eyes checked.
Sorry, it is definitely a fake.
I would actually put it in the Repro category, as these hats are sold on Ebay all the time as repros (sans insignia).
It appears your friend's father was either into collecting repros, or he was taken advantage of by unscrupulous sellers.

It is not uncommon to find reproductions in a "collector's" stash. There are several reasons this occurs. One, the collector purchased a bad item unintentionally. Two, the collector purchased a repro to fill a hole in the collection. Three, the collector also dabbled in reenacting and wore it for events. You will find the third case in my collection including a Bergmuetze that looks original but is repro. Trust those commenting on this item as it truly is a "one look" repro. NH
