Feel for material between the lining and the exterior wool. In the front should feel like a lattice of thin, flexible material. The back half of the cap body and the crown will have a thin layer of padding. If these features are present, your cap is a modern (post 1956) cap.

Depending on the shade of grey, your cap could be Heer or possibly DRK. These originally would have had a grey leather sweatband.

As already noted, the large "A" indicates the item was deemed surplus -- Aussonderung/ausgesondert

Yes it appears to have these characteristics of post war.How about the eagle and cockade.Maybe I can salavage some of the cap as
period.
