Article about: Unfortunately, the grommets are lined with some corrosion that makes it hard to photograph well. It looks like I could clean them rather safely but I wanted to post some pictures in its as-f

Thanks guys, for all your input and advice. Thanks, Mark for your advice on cleaning and preserving the grommets. I'll do as you suggested.

    No problem!
Take care on the exterior of the grommets. In fact they just need a careful wipe with a cotton-bud and isopropyl alchohol - nothing else.
Wonderful cap - the sweatband can be gently loosened (therefore expanded back to issue size) on a hat-block.
    Take Care,
    Mark

    Nice Cap !

    Hi Mark,

Agree this is an M40 but how would you name specifically this cap ? Its an M40, but for example if it has rbn's, has the sweatband, and no soutache vs an earlier dated M40 with no sweatband & that does have a soutache ? Or even one from '42 with both sweatband and soutache ?

    Cheers

    Hi Tim,
This has been a problem that has bugged tropical cap collectors. 'Naming' a cap type by year simply won't work. All five types were manufactured during 1942 - so "m40/42" isn't a starter.
Patterns would be more appropriate - 1942 m40 1st pattern etc.
We then have to work on gaining a consencus on the subject. Hell, look how hard it is to stop even well known dealers from using 'm41'.....
Good to see you posting again!

    Hi Mark

Agree, while m40/41 etc would be correct from a date point of view, it would not be from the different types produced in that year. A 1st model m40 is without sweatband, but with soutache etc. We could use the "model/pattern" to denote the m40 type and also name the year: a '42 2nd model/pattern m40 for example ?
Maybe its just best we get everyone to call them m40's
