It looks to me like a Bergmütze ( Mountain Cap ) worn by Mountain troops , similar to the M-43 but with a shorter peak . But I'm sure a hat guy will confirm or deny this ID .

I believe it is,although I don't have that hat in my shop it's at the home I have not seen another. But the capture papers that list the P-38 also lists 2 German Helmets that I have not seen, so who knows. Almost every visit so far has led to new discoveries.

I can't wait to see what else comes to light ! With all the SS insignia I'm surprised a SS hat or two hasn't surfaced .

Check hat for moth damaged when you get a chance .

Is it possible that this was an M42 that was upgraded to an M43? I am curious to see the stitching between the bill and the rest of the cap.

It could be , I thought Bergmütze due to the short peak and steep angle .
