Default SS and WH visor caps - Fake?

    Hello.

I only have these photos. What can you tell about it based on just these? The seller said the caps are original, but the insignia might be repro. I doubt the authenticity.

    Thank you.

The flexible sweat shield in the "SS" visor is an easy indicator that this is not a period hat. This is an easy lesson to learn as a beginner. Period caps came with a rigid sweat shield. Some fakers remove the flexible shields in an attempt to disguise their larceny.

Grey color of sweat band is another clue. Also, the D.R.G.M marking was used up until 1952 (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster) to denote a registered or patented item. So if a dealer claims this mark makes it 3rd Reich it could still be a postwar item. In this instance the caps appear to be ginned up postwar examples. NH

Finnlander - good idea! Do take a look at the post war thread. A number of items continued to be manufactured after the war and look similar to WWII. Items include steel helmets, caps and field gear items like bread bags, butter dishes, field phones and more. I'm sure the thread will be helpful to you. Cheers, NH
