What was the purpose of the plate? Is it police? Some organisation?

City of Amsterdam, not sure but Police or Fie or whatever other city officials need to wear an official item of headgear. You see it on buildings and even on bridges.

It may be worth looking into the design of the crown on the plate a little more, as I think it may have changed at some point. which may help to date the Shako, and/or the badge.
I only mention this as the only examples of the plate i have seen have a different crown.
I will have a quick google to find an image to compare.

    This is what i mean.
The first image is reportedly a police badge (1890 to 1940)
The second image is a firemans helmet (date unknown)
The third is yours, note the different crown design.
The sheild is also a different shape, and there is no scroll.

Thank you very much. It seems like it might be a later version I would think. Condition is good.
