Lt Colonel David Stirling, founder of the SAS, pictured in North Africa. Stirling persuaded his superior officers to allow him to found the unit in order to carry out raids against German airfields using small teams of highly trained men operating at night. Over the next 15 months he oversaw the destruction of 250 aircraft and put hundreds of vehicles out of action before being captured. He was dubbed 'The Phantom Major' by Rommel, and branded 'quite mad' by Field Marshal Montgomery-- Courtesy "The Daily Mail", today's on-line edition.
