This is a British field service cap (rather than a beret) of the WW2 period. It is the regular army type but could have belonged to a Home Guardsman. It looks to be of enlisted mans quality and has the standard general service buttons, it would originally have had a cap badge of course on the left hand side.

Indeed as Douglas has posted Universal Pattern Field Service Cap, or FS Cap as they are often known or a side cap. General army OR's issue up until circa 1937 to late 43 when it starts to get replaced by the General Service cap, if it has a better quality liner for officers, hard to say from the pics which it is, but OR's seems most likely. They were worn by the HG, but without evidence hard to say for certain.

I have 3 of this type of cap, all dated with makers marks, 39, 40 & 41, two are British made and one is Canadian. The earliest one has pre WWI Grenadier Guards buttons on it and is badged to the Grenadier Guards and is thought to probably have belonged to a Vet who had served before the Great war and then was part of the Royal Household Home Guard during WWII.

Most often they are printed so if worn and washed a lot the markings vanish, so not a problem, as it looks well worn.

I found traces of the ink stamp but to faded to read also the number inside doesn't match any of the Army 64 books so a bit of a let down, the number is 7668742 if anyone can assist that would be very helpful...............jake.
