Almost solved a mystery for me there. I have an RAF eagle with two threaded lugs on the rear and wondered what it was for but from the arrangement of securing your badge to this cap i can see how it works now. Only one small problem my bird looks the other way to yours, any suggestions? I had considered a cast copy but the threads are to good for this, is the badge on your cap solid or hollow at the rear?
It could be an eagle that was worn over the officer rank braid, particularly on the cuff of the tunic.

Thought to show the Aussie RAAF comparison (un issued) bottom cap
And a comparison with OR & Officers colours in my lot

The RAAF stopped issuing the sidecap in the early 1950's and didn't reintroduce it until 1977. As far as I know that style of sidecap was not manufactured after the war.

I still have my Garrison Cap as they are called in the RAAF i have just left and they are still current issue. They are a different design now.
