Well, guys, I tried to take good pictures of the piping but I can't seem to get good ones. I did, however, pull it back as Ade suggested, and I found a couple spots where it's a nice lemon yellow. After looking at it more I have decided that I think it is a signal cap.

How do you know it is a private purchase cap? Are signal caps rare?

    Thanks,
    Mo
The biggest indicator of a privately purchased cap is in the type of exterior fabric. Contract caps were made with mutzentrikot, a wool textile recognizable for its "ribs". Privately purchased caps tended to be made with either doeskin wool or "eskimo" wool, higher grades identifiable by their smoother appearance and softer, more velvety feel. Another key feature of non-privately purchased caps is a rust-brown oil cloth interior.

Signals caps are not "rare". But you have an authentic cap, and that's the important thing.

Below is a contract cap of mine. Note the ribbing on the trikot.
