Maybe just the angle, but the skull's eyes do not appear to be drilled (or he has a light backing behind them) and the skull appears to have an Assmann style point to it:

Feldgrau shiff's were often worn in the French Campaign of May 1940. Nice photo.

Officially the use of field-grey along with the black uniform was forbidden.
It was mentioned as such in the Heeresverordnungsblatt with an order from
June 6, 1944 Nr. 246 (Tragen der Feldmütze zur schwarzen Sonderbekleidung
    der Panzertruppen
    ).
This I noted in volume 1 for "Headgear of Hitler's Germany", page 55 with a photo,
which was published in 1989. But you will see the field-grey field-cap worn with many
    occasions. It was not uncommon!

The black Panzerschutzmütze was a generally unpopular piece of kit, while the black field cap was only officially introduced with an order of March 1940 (and it probably took a while after that before it became universally available).

Surely that was the main reason for the frequent wear of the field grey field cap with the black tankers' uniform in the pre- and early war period.
