    Default FAD Visor

Just picked this up. It is an EM/NCO visor for the pre-cursor to the RAD, the FAD (Freiwilliger Arbeits Dienst). These were only worn for about 2 years until replaced by the more familiar RAD "Robin Hood" cap.

These hats are very rare. They were not dress caps, but were made to be used while working. The body of the cap is made out of a thick herringbone cotton, and is in the traditional color of the Labor Corps, Erdbraun (earth brown.)

Officers would have a leather or Vulkanfiber visor, OR's a cloth-covered bill (this was true of the early HJ visors, as well).

Piping is chocolate-brown wool, as is the band (which is unpiped, also like early HJ visors):

Unlike the RAD (which used a spade with a superimposed swastika), the FAD used a plain silvered shovel (over the traditional symbol of agrarianism, the stalks of wheat) and below this, the first style political cockade. Note that the swaz is static on this, and not mobile:

If anyone has a nice FAD portrait of one of these caps in wear, I would love to see it.

Never seen one before and probably will never see another, very rare cap. Where on earth did you find this one?

    Chris,
Thank you for posting this cap. In all my years of collecting hats I never ever managed to find an example of this one.
Interestingly your shot of the roll-call shows the other version of this cap with the cap band in the same light colour as the crown of the cap.
Could you show the interior? I am extremely interested in this early period of headgear and the linings during these years are informative.
Thanks, and do let me know if you ever get fed up with it.
    Derek
