    Hello dear forum members.

I bought this cap without emblems and drawstring.

I have the emblems worried and appropriate and wanted to get a second opinion. What do you think about this specimen?

    Thanks

    Greetings from Bavaria

Do I get you right that you want the insignia authenticated?

I am no specialist for these but I suppose that a picture of the reverse is needed for a final verdict - unless one of the specialists can identify them from your pictures alone.

Hat is original, and the insignia look original as well.

Question. Inside, the cap is filled with gauze and it is really hard. My question would be with what was the gauze treated that will be so hard and stay in shape?

I like this question (I have always wondered how the buckram was stiffened that was used to maintain the centerband for the Feldmütze Alter Art)!

There were several means to stiffen fabrics - starch (made of rice e.g.) is one of them, another would be shellack and there were many glues (made of different natural materials mixed and boiled up - I have a period recipe somewhere how to make glue from flour + chemicals which I can't find at the moment) which were used (= verschiedene Leime).

See also this definition: "Dem Füllen und Versteifen zum Beeinflussen des Griffs der Textilien (Beispiel Petticoat) dienen verschiedene Stärken und spezielle Kunstharze (die auch zur Pflegeleicht-Ausrüstung eingesetzt werden) sowie Magnesiumsulfat, Dextrin und Albumin."

Yet another method to stiffen fabric was the Roßhaarverarbeitung, see here (post # 38):

    Thanks for the quick response
I am very fascinated by the production of products from the time back then, especially the caps have done to me (why I do not know exactly).
You can see that they worked with their heads back then.
What concerns me even more is the production of the visor. I know they are made of vulkanfiber but the exact production is not explained.

Thanks again for the detailed answers.
It is very nice that I can share my interests with others.

That sounds dangerous - these caps have had it in for me for quite some time now. There are still so many questions/secrets/tricks of the trade which will never be solved. What intrigues me is how some cap makers managed to produce such elegant caps - the templates are import but workmanship seems to be even more important.

As to Vulkanfiber see here: Vulkanfiber – Wikipedia
and here: Kunststoff Museum Troisdorf: VULKANFIBER von Dr. Kurt Nising

Is is one of the first Kunststoffe made of Zellulose/Zellstoff = wood. It was pressed and lacquered and used (apart from visors) for different purposes (suitcases e.g.).

What concers sharing your interests you are in the right place. Many of us have the same "Dachschaden".

    Greetings to Bavaria!

I tried to make an SS cap (size 57) but it will not be so elegant. I can upload photos from the cap. It is also the elegant shape that makes this type of cap interesting.
