    Hi Pat,

It is and it is not an aviators cap ! The cap is original and is for an NCO and has the cockades to match. The tell is the capband as it is cloth and not velvet for officers. The cap was worn by artillery, specialist troops ie pioneers, train troops as well as pilots.......

As pilots tended to be officers they would wear the field cap from their old units and if you google some pics of richoften you will see him wearing the cap with a crown made oF silk. These caps were throw backs to the racing caps they wore for equestrian events pre war.

So the cap could technically be a pilots cap but there appears no real provenance to say it was.................if you believe bid other wise there are several other nicer caps also on offer this week..................good luck.

Hope this helps and others hopefully will add info to identify a true pilots cap........I would want their name in the cap and original flying log to be 100% sure but that's as likely as world peace and that's not going to happen either.

    cheers

    tony

Thanks for the replies and information gents. I had a feeling the cap wasent Right. It's still a nice cap but the price would probably go very high. There are some other nice visors this week I might bid on instead.

    Thanks again,
    Patrick

I tend to hoard and revel in heaps. Your taste would improve my collection and its pleasing arrangement, to say nothing of a bright, colored folio book on said foetid headwear.
