    Nice looking cap.

    IMO, If you want the rule of thumb on when this cap was worn, its technically a service cap not a field cap. Other ranks were allowed to buy their own caps and these are known as "private purchase". The owner would need to get it approved before he could wear it. The soldier would have been issued a service cap for walking our dress and parades and a field cap for manouvers etc...usually a side cap that could be easliy carried in the pocket or backpack.

    Hope this helps in clarifying when it would have been worn officially.
