How to preserve valuable cap
Hi everyone,
I have secured a fantastic SS officer visor cap and I was wondering just that... how should I preserve it from humidity, dust and such? One of my main concerns is humidity as at the moment I live in Ireland and over here it's really, really wet.
I am aware that any display box/case would protect it from dust, but do you guys have any other tips or suggestions? Any comment would be greatly appreciated!
Kind regards,
MG.

I'm pretty sure FB and others store their visors in sealed (Ziploc) bags. Not sure if this helps with humidity (and certainly doesn't help with viewing them )
I don't have these humidity issues and store them behind glass with cedar and Bounce fabric dryer sheets to repel moths

Thanks buddy, ziploc bags are a good idea, especially if some kind of humidity absorbent material is put inside. However, I agree that it's not the best way to display them...
By the way, I can't wait to post pictures of it. I will have it in a couple of weeks, I am very excited.

Yes. Let left out the part of those little silica packets. Very important. Also remove as much air as possible when sealing the bags
Have always wanted an SS visor myself. Can't wait to see it

It's been hard to find what in my opinion is the right one. All the research has been insane

Do Not place it in a ziploc bag!!!! or any other sealed plastic container in a high humidity environment. You'll get mold in no time from an extreme micro-climate. Cover it with unbleached cotton muslin to keep dust and light off it.
spend a little bit of money on proper conservatin materisla nd information form a place like Hollinger Hollinger Metal Edge - Since 1945!
get a proper artifact box and some ethafoam you can cut and contour and include several desicant packets, here is an example, ULINE - Shipping Boxes, Shipping Supplies, Packaging Materials, Packing Supplies and routinely cycle those out and inspect your item every few weeks.
If you have it out in a room away from an exterior wall and there is air flow you should have nothing to worry about even if relative humidty goes above 55% for a few days.

Well I did hedge with saying I'm not sure if it was good for humid environments...so I'm in the clear

Agree...no "zip lock" bags. A dehumidifier would do the job if the display room is not too large. Wrapping it in cotton muslin would help too, but then it's not on display.
A dehumidifier is cheap. Uses little electric, they are quiet. The ones made today are very energy efficient, not like the models from years ago. Just a thought...
