Good call from our members. I have seen caps with insignia mixed or replaced - even from veteran "bring backs." I had a Heer infantry cap from a veterans family with a cloth Luftwaffe eagle tacked onto it. Replacing it with the correct Heer metal eagle was easy. You may be able to find the correct insignia for this cap with some effort. Good luck! NH
Seriously though, I am so appreciative of all of you and your help!
So I took a look at the cap and the band doesn't feel like what I expect velvet to feel like. That doesn't mean it's not it, but if it's not velvet, does that change anything about was discovered or talked about today.
Most are velvet, some are just black wool. I do not know why that is the case.

Out of curiosity, how common (or uncommon) is it for a cap like this to not have the strap? There's no indication there ever was one on this cap. Same question regarding the two holes found on the side of the cap
Once again, your help is most appreciated. This has been such an interesting forum to read.
Got it-- the "holes" you are referring to are ventilation grommets.
You are correct, I do not see any holes for the chinstrap buttons.
It may be a cap that was unissued, it that it never made it to retail.
