Default Interesting cap manufacturer thread from the WAF...

Some interesting correspondence that was posted up on the WAF some time back, I thought I would re-post it all here for general reading…

    Bob

EMHAGE is the name of the East German company that derived from the Robert Lubstein (EREL) company, once Mrs. Lubstein was forced out by the East German Government (she had rubn the company since Robert's death in 1948, and had been commuting every morning from her son's home, in the Western Sector, into the Eastern Zone where the company was located). Mrs. Lubstein was about 75 at the time and had no other source of income. The East Germans gave her nothing.
At any rate, the Robert Lubstein company became first:

    1) VEB Perfekt (Volkseigener Betrieb - Publicly Owned Firm - i.e. a firm owned by the East German "People". As companies were taken over by the DDR government). Almost all firms were listed with the "VEB" as part of the name, initially during this period.

    2) Later, the firms were allowed to use a more individual name, and VEB Perfekt became "Emhage". This company was making caps for DDR military and paramilitary forces until the wall came down, and for the Red Army as well (though all examples I have seen have been private purchase officer caps), through 1955 for sure, and probably later, as well. After the Wall came down and East Germany was opened, this business manager tried to privatize the firm and make it a going concern with a new name, but he couldn't manage it and it went belly up (for many years, production had continued on in the original Lubstein factory building, thus the address on Emhage caps is the same as Lubstein's business address, at Heinrich-Roller Strasse 15).
As an anecdote: I met this man last March in Berlin, as he was giving away (free) about 15 bolts of East German uniform cloth (picked up by a repro cap maker named Olaf Gaube, who now makes EREL copies, and owns the EREL trademark logo).
This not very friendly fellow was in the midst of preparations to bolt from Berlin for the "small yacht he had bought for himself in Denmark", he said.

If your cap has the name Emhage in it, then it dates from sometime after mid 1953.

As for cap makers: Until my book was published, NO one had made any real attempt at identifying the makers in any detail. I have covered all the major players in the industry in my book, but it is certainly true that there were many more little local shops that I didn't list, because I hadn't ever come across them.
Any cap maker could open a little business with an apprentice and a couple of seamstresses (In 1902 Lubstein himself started his business out of his kitchen with only his wife to help). There was enough business, even locally, to support this; so, there was indeed an almost unlimited number of small, local makers - however, the number of surviving and available examples from any given one of these little businesses will, by definition, be pretty limited, since they never had a large distribution to begin with.

In most cases, there is no documentation available for them any longer, either, since they were not normally entered in the city's Handelsregister (Commercial Register) unless the little firm's business structure was a GmbH (a "Limited" company, in the British style), which form was REQUIRED to be entered in the Commercial Register. Thus, there would be no entry in the Commercial Register, and though they were surely at one time entered in the city / town's Gewerbeamt (Business Bureau) register - these records were in all likelihood destroyed postwar, since these offices have a time-limit on keeping old records - woops! Out of luck again.
I will be addressing some of these many smaller makers, however, in an addendum to The Collector's Guide to Cloth Third Reich Military Headgear that has been requested by my editor (publication early next year). For those interested, this will also include some additional Lubstein information, such as the first ever photograph of him (which I received from his Grandson) - I felt a counter was needed to my having published the picture of Ernst Hoffmann in the original book - a man who turned out to be a bitter rival of the Great One, Robert Lubstein - so it is fitting.

Hope this is of osme help! Hals und Beinbruch!

This is an old request, but the ones you mention are all East German (DDR) makers, circa 1949-1990.

The list cited above was made by Enorepap.

I have attempted to list all makers in the pinned thread. We never will have every one. There are thousands of them, and it is hard to differentiate between Effekten shops and makers.

I found this list somewhere but cannot guarantee it, maybe of help

    “Juoneen” posted this in reply…

Being posted in 2011, ( a few years ago) I came across this thread , and noticed something I wanted to ask the hat experts about I thought important that needed clarified.

The listed address for otto Zillmann on page one is:
    Otto ZILLMANN SCHWEINFURT Markt 23

Upon further observation of supposedly original wartime hats it has come to my attention that hats all say all Zillmann hats (repro, or original)say Markt 22, NOT 23...SO.... are the hats fakes if they say 22 in the top under the sweat shield, or was the listing on page one a typo (because it says Zillmanns address is Markt 23) .
Here is a thread where stonemint shows an original white top ss hat with the address as Markt 22, http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/cap-au...visors-261697/ and once this issue is cleared up, one more question: Were there ever any original hats with the style writing as found similar to the MM's found on the repro hats? (such as found on this repro, or slightly similar as the following makers mark used a different FONT) http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/cap-au...muetze-162340/ Thanks for any help to clear up the controversey.
Oh I almost forgot one more question I have regarding Otto Zillmann: Is the Third reich manufacturers number for Otto Zillmann 39 ? (found on the inside tag)

    Bob, thanks for that post.
Gary Wilkins wrote the book I wish I had, and he basically kick-started the fascination with makers and their histories (and he did it before the internet made this information readily available.)

Gary had planned to write an addendum, but as he explains here, he could not:

    As of SEP 2010

    ** ADDENDUM NEWS **

    1) I have decided that (a) given the fact that there is no way in hell anyone could survive on the minimal profits garnered from reference books alone; and (b) given the fact that I (like most anybody else), must work a full-time job, as well as take care of many other assorted time-eating projects in order to feed my face and pay the bills; (c) given the fact that my daughter was just wounded by an insurgent 7.62mm round while serving in Afghanistan (a distraction for me); and (d) given that I spend a great deal of time playing in a successful rock band in Fayetteville, NC--something I really enjoy very much—-I have, after much consideration, soul searching, and with a heavy heart (and with my busy band schedule very much in mind)--decided that I must put my plans for any Addendum on a semi-permament "shelf freeze." There is just not enough incentive for me to want to invest the very significant outlay of time and additional money that it would take to properly complete the project. It's simply not worth the hassle. My apologies to you all.

    Thanks!

I hope Gary knows (and you can tell him this for me) that this is one of my favorite books. My knowledge (which still has a long way to go, increased 10 fold after the first time through. I have read it twice and consult it often. These types of books are obviously a labor of love and not profit, as he notes, but to me they are gold and people like Gary should be applauded.

This goes to all the authors of these reference books!

Those interested in the list of cap makers on an industrial as well as artisan basis can today easily buy the digital version of the RZM handbook, which contains a list of thousands of makers and addresses as of the year 1935. These lists are only for those with an RZM license at said time.
Wim Saris reminds us of how this system was subject to its own turbulence.

I own the real deal, actually. The vast majority of the names in the RZM list of licenses are never, ever mentioned at all in these collector exchanges.
